Welcome to Laura’s music.

2016 was a whirlwind year. In April I was delighted to be selected as one of the finalists in The Metropolitan Orchestra’s Composer Development Program, where I had the rare opportunity of workshopping a score I wrote earlier in the year with conductor Sarah-Grace Williams and members of the orchestra. This was a wonderful experience and gave me invaluable feedback on my work. I also spent a good part of the year touring NSW, Queensland & the ACT with my band Chaika. We’ve been polishing up a host of new pieces for our third album, many of which were helped along by the wonderful Bundanon Trust Artist in Residence program we were a part of in 2015. I also recorded two pieces of mine with the ARIA award winning Mara! Ensemble & The Martenitsa Choir whom I both sing with and compose for, and continued to perform with my sister Susie taking our album Meremba to new audiences, including the Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival.

To start 2017 in style Chaika was thrilled to be asked to support multi-award winning & multi-platinum Irish artist Sharon Shannon with her band at The Basement in Sydney. Since then we have been inching ever and ever closer to our recording dates and are looking forward to going into the studio again with our awesome engineer Bob Scott. I’ve also taken up teaching composition to private students and have been enjoying the challenge of coaxing musical works out of others instead of just myself. And finally I’m starting work on an orchestral & choral project which has been in the works in my head for many years and is now beginning its journey to the page.
